Bridlington Member Starts 'Tour de Yorkshire'

Bethany Playforth is a Bridlington member with a physical disability and a lot of good cheer.

She was chosen as a VIP to flag the start of the inaugural ‘Tour de Yorkshire’ on the first of May. The world-famous cycle race departed from the Spa Bridlington in the first stage of a three-day event, which saw top riders racing 173 km.

Bethany had first accessed cycling 12 months ago on an adapted bike provided by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and its ‘All Ride’ scheme, which helped her develop a passion for the sport. So, to warm up for the ‘Tour de Yorkshire’ launch Bethany organised a sponsored cycle event in aid of ‘All Ride’.

On the day of the race Bethany was also joined by three fellow service users from Priory View Day Centre; James Kilner, John Turner, and Leona Hull; who all used specially-adapted bikes (with the support of staff). John Fortnum, team leader at Priory View, said: "It was absolutely wonderful to see our service users playing such an important role in a truly major event for the area. Everyone, not least those taking part, have been really excited about this and we were all there on the day to cheer them on."
