Mayor of Northampton Visits Mormon Conference

The Mayor and Mayoress of Northampton visited a conference at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (known as the Mormons) with around 500 in attendance, and a live broadcast to a further 400 in other centres in Kettering and Huntingdon.  Mayor of Northampton, Councillor Chris  Malpas and Mayoress Lynne Malpas, were given a tour of the meeting house and family history centre on Harlestone Road prior to the conference and remarked on the number of young people there.

The was the first visit for the Mayor and Mayoress to the Church who met with regional Church leader, Karl Hirst and Arthur Newbury beforehand to learn more about the faith.  A local choir and talks by local and national members were included in the conference, which is held twice per year for Mormons in the Northamptonshire area.

The Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Christopher Malpas commented, ‘ The Mayoress and I were very honoured and pleased to be invited to Sunday’s service to understand how the religion of Mormon works. It was enlightening to find out about Mormonism and see so many people from Northamptonshire gather to share their interest. In my term of office I have been to many religious services and by attending these events it opens my eyes to people’s beliefs and ideals about the world we live in.’
