Last month The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints saw a hive of activity at their meetinghouse on Belle Vue Road, Paignton, Devon as members of the church celebrated the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the building with special guest Kevin Foster, MP for Torbay. The Paignton LDS chapel has been used as a place of Sunday worship and weekday activities for a decade. The building is not a purpose built Church, but has many great features, such as plenty of rooms over this Victorian property’s four storeys, and an enchanting sea view.

The celebrations began with a cantata of music and the spoken word called, “The Saviour of The World”, and it was enjoyed by everyone. The choir from the Church’s Newton Abbot congregation sang with the members from Paignton taking part in the spoken word - the effect was very spiritually uplifting.
Afterwards a large collection of arts and crafts were displayed including jewellery making, quilt work, knitted goods, cross stitch and pictures painted by members of the Church. There was also an exhibition of a 72 hour emergency pack with an explanation of why it is important to have one. Videos made by the young people of the church were also shown. Included in the exhibition was video of still photographs of the building which had been created by Bishop Peter Schofield, the local leader of the church.
Tony Arkell had researched the history of the building and exhibited the most exciting and historically interesting findings for all to view. Ken and Gwyneth Mealey’s display of their family tree made the day complete. On hand was a family history consultant who helped people with their own family history research problems.
As part of the celebrations, a special Sunday Service was held and Bishop Schofield welcomed the special guest Kevin Foster, MP for Torbay. The congregation was addressed by Paul Martin the leader of the Church for the wider Plymouth area which includes Paignton. Bishop Schofield also delivered a sermon.
