Plymouth Concert raises funds for Stroke Unit

The Plymouth Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints played host to the City of Plymouth Concert Band in a special fundraising evening for The Stroke Unit at Derriford Hospital.  The theme of the evening was American centred: 'American Independence Day - A Musical Celebration' which resulted in £737 being raised on the night.

In addition to the Concert band playing, there were also performances by vocalist Kathryn Martin, who was accompanied by the band as she sang numbers from ‘Carousel’ and ‘West Side Story’.

Professional Spanish guitarist Mark Barnwell also delighted the audience with his own arrangements and compositions such as “Hotel California” and “Rumba Latina”, a blend of Latin and Flamenco style.   Mark kindly gave his performance free of charge on the evening in support of the fundraising and played four pieces in total.

The Concert band played music made famous by Glen Miller,  Frank Sinatra as well as more traditional music such as "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and ‘Civil War Suite’ at the end of the concert,  resulting in audience participation with a rousing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".

Donations collected on the evening amounted to £737 which were presented to a representative from The Stroke Unit. The organisation was chosen as several members of the band, Church and also congregation of the Mount Gould Methodist Church, where the band practice, have received help and support in the past from the Stroke Unit.

This is the band's fifth appearance at the Plymouth Chapel.  The concert was supported by nearly 300 people comprising Church members and their friends.  The evening was a huge success which was enjoyed by all in attendance.'
