Frances B. Monson, Wife of President Thomas S. Monson, Passes Away

News Release — 18 May 2013

Frances B. Monson, wife of Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away at 6:35 a.m. Friday 17th May in a Salt Lake City hospital surrounded by family. She had been hospitalized for several weeks and passed away peacefully of causes incident to age. Sister Monson was 85 years old. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Family History Volunteers Reach Billion-Record Milestone

Brian Adam MSP passed away on Thursday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He represented the Aberdeen Donside constituency in the Scottish Parliament and was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Bridge of Don congregation in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Olympia Welcomes FamilySearch

FamilySearch workers recently welcomed visitors to the “Who Do You Think You Are?” exhibition held at London’s Olympia, offering expert advice on how to start one’s own family history search.  The nonprofit online genealogical centre provided forty consultants to work the event, helping participants receive the guidance needed in finding long lost relatives.  At times the FamilySearch exhibit generated a three hour wait for assistance due to its popularity. Staff from the London Regional Family History library, temporarily located in the National Archives in Kew, were also on hand to support the demanding interest in family history.

Rebekah donates hair to charity

Rebekah MacDonald, aged 5 years, of the Dunfermline congregation in Dundee Scotland , always dreamed of having Rapunzel hair, but recently chose to have 15 inches of her hair cut off for charity. Her hair was donated to 'The Little Princess Trust', an organisation that provides real-hair wigs, at no cost to children, who suffer hair loss due to illnesses such as cancer.

Coventry Concert provides toys for local children

Original show 'Redemption' in Celebration of 30th anniversary

The congregations of the Poole, Dorset area of the Church celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2012. To mark this occasion, local Church leaders proposed that a special show be produced to utilise all the talent of the members into one substantial production. This show, ‘Redemption’, raised £2700 through ticket sales and donations for the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal in November.  The Church supported this appeal nationally for the first time this year involving congregations all around the UK in collecting, supporting and raising funds through organized events for the RBL.

Harrogate Homeless receive Donations from Mormon Women

The Harrogate Homeless Project was the grateful recipient of donations by the women of the Harrogate congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Lynn Purser, the Women’s leader of the Relief Society Organisation, one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the world, with a membership of 4.5 million, presented 50 bags of donated items, which included toiletries and other essential items.  These bags were given to the charity to hand onto the homeless who are sleeping rough on the streets of Harrogate.

Young Girls Donate craft kits to Local Hospital

Wandsworth give Service to the Royal British Legion

Members of the Wandsworth area, in South London, responded positively to the encouragement of Church Leaders to become involved in serving our local community.  On this occasion they took up the challenge of selling poppies on half of the Royal British Legion (RBL).  The RBL is a charitable organisation that was established more than 90 years ago.  The Poppy Appeal is a significant part of its work that raises funds to support current and former service personnel and their families in a variety of ways, such as offering financial and welfare assistance.

Bedford Mormons Come to the Rescue of Poppy Day Appeal

Meet the Olympic Volunteers

Church members from congregations around Great Britain are some of  the Games Makers, the 70,000 volunteers of the Olympic and Paralympic games, so called by Lord Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee who commented that, 'Volunteers can make or break the Games'.

They are using their skills, experience and time to be part of the 'Greatest Show on Earth' in London and at other venues around Great Britain and were chosen from 240,000 applicants.

The volunteers are involved in hundreds of roles from raking the sand to assisting in the press office, from scanning spectator tickets to transporting the athletes and were first used in the London Olympics of 1948.

New Europe Area Presidency

Effective today, Elder José A. Teixeira began his service as the new President of the Europe Area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Patrick Kearon will serve as First Counselor and Elder Kent F. Richards as Second Counselor. The new area presidency was announced last spring.

175th Anniversary of the First Mormon Missionaries Arriving in Britain

Elder Heber C Kimball and six other missionaries land in Liverpool, England, July 1837.  The first nine baptisms soon take place.  It is not long before the work blossoms.  By 1851, there is a harvest of 34,000 converts in the British Isles (nearly three times more than the American membership at the time).

Elder Frerich Gorts Attends Launch of the Global Charter of Conscience

Frerich Görts, former undersecretary of the German federal government and currently serving as representative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the European Union institutions, attended the launch of the Global Charter of Conscience. The document reaffirms and supports Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event, hosted by Finnish MEP Sari Essayah, took place at the European Parliament, in Brussels, on June 21, 2012.
