A Christmas Celebration of Family History

Over sixty eager family history enthusiasts attended "˜A Christmas Celebration of Family History' held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, situated on Harlestone Road, Northampton on Wednesday 7th December.  It has become an annual event over the last few years as changes to the Family History Centre have taken place, improving both the facilities and services offered.

Family History presentations followed a festive message, some carol singing and then a talk from the guest speaker - Daniel Williams.  As the Archive Development Manager within the Public Services department at Northamptonshire Records Office in Northampton, Mr Williams had been invited by the Directors of the Centre, Stephen and Janet Hough.  He spoke about the role of an archivist and explained how Northamptonshire Records Office operates, including the ten miles of shelving within the archive and gave some examples of records held.  Finally, he discussed the future role of archives, how digitisation and computer access may change how we view archives in the future.

The presentations were very well received by the audience and these were followed by a buffet lunch.  The regularly attending participants were able to share some interesting insights into their experience researching family history, as well as some remarkable stories.  The Centre offers help with researching and short computer courses for those wanting assistance with using the newly available online materials.
