Manchester SACRE approves new RE Syllabus

On Tuesday 21st June 2016, primary school teachers from across Manchester and Trafford met in the Great Hall at Manchester Town Hall for the launch of, and training on, the recently agreed Religious Education (RE) syllabus for schools in the two Council areas. The launch event was formally opened by Councillor Ahmed Ali, a Manchester City Councillor, and Chair of the Manchester Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE). The main trainer at the event was Lat Blaylock, editor of the teachers’ magazine “RE Today”, who had advised five SACREs in Greater Manchester in developing the new syllabus. Lat Blaylock has also been working with Bishop James Holt, RE Advisor on the Church’s UK Public Affairs Committee in developing a “Miniguide” on the LDS faith to accompany his agreed syllabus work throughout the country.

Later in the day Councillor Ali chaired the summer term meeting of the Manchester SACRE, hosted at the Church’s Young Single Adult Centre in the city’s University District. The meeting started with a conducted tour of the building led by Elder Wang from Taiwan and Elder Watterson from Logan, Utah both are currently serving in the England, Manchester Mission. SACRE members had many questions about the Church answered during the tour. Following refreshments, the formal part of the meeting reviewed the launch event held earlier in the day, and agreed to the LDS Miniguide being made available on the Manchester City Council website.
