Mayor of Chesterfield Attends 'Meet the Mormons'

On Saturday 18th September the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Councillor Barry and June Bingham, attended a VIP viewing of the film 'Meet the Mormons' at the Chesterfield chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The film is about six ordinary people with six extraordinary stories which has raised $1.8 million for the American Red Cross. It was also ranked in the top 10 of the USA box office.

Following the film viewing, Councillor Bingham commented,  “the bits that I liked the best were the people's life stories, how inspiring it was that people had come through diversity and especially through their faith. The story that was the most touching was the young lady who became pregnant when she was 16 years old. I felt that there were things throughout the film that touched basically with the way I think, and my belief in God. It’s been an absolute privilege and an honour to be asked to come to the Mormon church”.

Bishop Mark Hamilton welcomed the guests, and presented them with a commemorative plaque called “Two Christian Spires”. This globally unique streetscape depicting the famous Crooked Spire and the LDS Chapel, was named by Chesterfield Council Leader John Burrows following his tour of the new Sheffield Road chapel and helps answer the frequently asked question “are Mormons Christians?”

When asked what his favourite part of the film was Bishop Hamilton remarked that he really liked “the American Football coach. I liked the way he balanced his work at the highest possible level with family and opportunities to serve in the Church, as well as keeping the Sabbath day holy”.

The film can be viewed on Netflix and Apple iStore.
